Sailing Tips - 1. Preparation
Before setting sail the first thing we should think about is getting the boat ship shape and ready to go. Make sure the boat is in good shape and well equiped, that the batteries are charged, doors and portholes closed. The electrics should be in good condition and of course make sure nothing is left dangling that could knock about while we are sailing. It's also important to take note of the weather report for the day.
Once out on deck we can double check that everything is in good shape. Make sure that halyards and sheets are always nicely coiled so they don't get tangled or knotted just when we are about to execute a manoeuvre. We should check the electronics on deck, have a look over the masts and rigging and if we are thinking of hoisting a spinnaker later on, this should be set up while still in port where things are relatively calm and tranquil.
If we are going out in rough weather then everything should be double checked.
Now we're happy that everything is in good order, we can release our moorings and set sail. Once out of port we can untie the fenders and store them below decks. This will make it much easier to move about on deck and when executing manoeuvres like tacking and jibing so the crew can move easily from one side to the other.
